Why is the M6 Toll so much more expensive?

Length and economic model. Other UK tolls are bridges or tunnels of a few hundred metres, run by public bodies or local councils with a low cost recovery target. The M6 Toll is 27 miles of dedicated motorway built and run by a private concessionaire (originally Midland Expressway Limited under construction by CAMBBA, now owned by IFM Investors and Aleatica) under a 53-year concession. The toll has to recover both the construction cost (around £900 million in 2003 prices) and an investment return over the concession lifetime to 2054.

Are clean air zones a road toll?

Strictly no, but they function similarly for non-compliant vehicles. The UK has CAZ or LEZ schemes in London (ULEZ at £12.50 daily for non-compliant cars), Birmingham (CAZ at £8 daily), Bath, Bradford, Bristol, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Glasgow. Compliant vehicles (newer petrol and diesel, all electric) pay nothing. They are emissions charges, not road usage charges, but they do affect the cost of driving into city centres.

UK toll roads FAQ

How many toll roads are there in the UK?
Around 12 to 15 chargeable road or bridge crossings, depending on how you count clean air zones. The M6 Toll is the only major all-motorway toll road in England. Other charges are bridges, tunnels, estuary crossings or city-centre congestion charges.
What is the most expensive UK toll?
The M6 Toll at £11.60 for a car at the full-route contactless rate. No other UK toll comes close for a single passenger-car crossing. Most other UK tolls sit in the £1.50 to £4.00 range. The M6 Toll is priced higher because it is a 27-mile dedicated motorway, not a bridge or tunnel.
What about the Dartford Crossing?
Dartford Crossing (Dart Charge, M25 J1a-J31) is £2.50 for a car. Open 24 hours but charged 06:00 to 22:00 only. No barriers, ANPR billing, pay by 23:59 the following day to avoid a PCN. Different operator (National Highways) and pricing model than the M6 Toll.
Are there other Midlands tolls?
Birmingham operates a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) for non-compliant vehicles entering the city centre, charged £8 per day for cars. This is not a road toll like the M6 Toll, it is an emissions charge. Compliant vehicles (most newer petrol and diesel cars, all EVs) pay nothing.
Are any UK tolls free for electric vehicles?
Some are. Mersey Gateway and Mersey Tunnels are free for fully electric vehicles registered with the operator. Dartford Crossing offers a discount for low-emission vehicles registered for a Dart Charge Local Resident Scheme. The M6 Toll has no EV discount.
Which UK toll has the smallest charge?
Several historic privately-owned road tolls charge under £1 (e.g. Whitchurch Bridge in Berkshire at around 60p for a car). These are tiny local crossings. The mainstream major-route tolls (Dartford, M6 Toll, Mersey, Tyne) all sit at £2 or above for cars.
