M6 Toll alternatives
Five free routes that can replace the M6 Toll, depending on the time of day and your destination. The right choice usually depends on traffic at Spaghetti Junction.
The default alternative is the free M6 through Birmingham. Off peak it adds 5 to 15 minutes. At rush hour it adds 30 to 90 minutes, which is when the £11.60 toll starts to look like a bargain.
Free M6 through Birmingham
The default. Smart motorway, variable limits, runs through Spaghetti Junction.
Watch for Spaghetti Junction (M6 J6) and the M5 merge at J8. Variable speed limits are common.
A38 / A5 cross-country
Local A-roads through Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield and Cannock. Single carriageway in places.
Heavy congestion in towns. Not motorway-grade. Avoid with a caravan or large van.
M42 / M40 via Warwick
Avoid Birmingham entirely. Loop south on the M42 and continue on the M40 to the South East.
Adds miles but avoids the worst of the West Midlands traffic. Free.
M1 J24 / A50 / M6 J15
Strong alternative for Manchester and Liverpool traffic. Bypasses Birmingham via Stoke-on-Trent.
Mostly dual carriageway A50 between Derby and Stoke. Solid free alternative for long-haul trips.
M54 / A5 via Telford
Useful western detour for journeys to or from Wales and Shropshire.
Joins the free M6 north of the toll section. Avoids Spaghetti Junction entirely.
Quick decision flow
- Check Google Maps or Waze five minutes before M42 J7 / M6 J3a.
- If the M6 through Birmingham is shown green: stay on the free M6, save your money.
- If shown amber: judgement call, consider the toll if your journey is time-critical.
- If shown red or with a posted delay over 20 minutes: pay the toll, it almost always wins.
