M6 Toll alternatives

Five free routes that can replace the M6 Toll, depending on the time of day and your destination. The right choice usually depends on traffic at Spaghetti Junction.

Quick answer

The default alternative is the free M6 through Birmingham. Off peak it adds 5 to 15 minutes. At rush hour it adds 30 to 90 minutes, which is when the £11.60 toll starts to look like a bargain.

Useful western detour for journeys to or from Wales and Shropshire.

Off peak
Slightly longer than toll

Quick decision flow

  1. Check Google Maps or Waze five minutes before M42 J7 / M6 J3a.
  2. If the M6 through Birmingham is shown green: stay on the free M6, save your money.
  3. If shown amber: judgement call, consider the toll if your journey is time-critical.
  4. If shown red or with a posted delay over 20 minutes: pay the toll, it almost always wins.

See the worth-it analysis for the maths behind these calls.

Alternatives FAQ

Is the free M6 ever quicker than the M6 Toll?
Off peak, yes. Late evenings, early Sunday mornings and most overnight hours, the M6 through Birmingham is faster than the toll detour because the toll loops out and back in. Live traffic apps will tell you exactly when this is true.
Is the A38 a viable alternative?
Only as a last resort. The A38 between Birmingham and Lichfield is single carriageway through several towns and adds 20 to 30 minutes off-peak. It is not motorway-grade and is unsuitable for large vehicles.
Should I use the M42 / M40 to avoid Birmingham?
If you are heading to or from the South East, the M42 / M40 loop is often the fastest free option, even if it adds mileage. Smart motorway-grade roads at 70 mph trump A-roads at 30-40 mph.
Does Google Maps recommend the M6 Toll?
Sometimes. By default Google Maps prefers free roads, but the route advisory will suggest the M6 Toll when delays on the free M6 are significant. Trust the advisory, especially at rush hour.
