Vehicle classification guide

Many drivers do not know which class applies. The system uses height at the front axle and weight, not what you drive on the V5C.

Two-wheeled motor vehicles

Examples: Motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, trikes

2

Car

Light vehicles under 1.3m at the front axle, under 3.5t

Examples: Cars, small SUVs, people carriers, small vans under 1.3m

3

Car with trailer / light goods

Cars towing trailers or vehicles between 1.3m and 1.9m

Examples: Cars with caravans, Transit-sized vans, large SUVs over 1.3m

4

Heavy and abnormal loads

Vehicles outside the standard Class 1 to 5 system (notably abnormal indivisible loads, escort vehicles and oversized cargo) attract bespoke pricing set on application, which can run to several hundred pounds for the largest convoys. The operator does not publish these rates; bookings must be made in advance with MEL on 0330 660 0790.

Pricing FAQ

What are the M6 Toll prices in 2026?
In 2026 a car (Class 2) pays £11.60 contactless for the full three-zone route, or £9.80 with a Breeze account. Two zones cost £9.10 (£8.00 Breeze) and one zone £6.70 (£4.00 Breeze). Motorcycles pay £5.70 for the full route and the largest HGVs £20.20. From 7 July 2026 the full-route car rate rises to £12.00 contactless (£10.20 Breeze), per the operator's published tariff.
Why are there three pricing tiers?
Standard contactless is the price you pay if you tap a card or device at the barrier. Breeze is a pre-paid account that uses ANPR and gives a discount of around 10 to 65% depending on vehicle class and zone count. Lite is a free ANPR account that lets you pass without stopping but charges the standard contactless rate. Pick Lite for convenience, Breeze for savings, contactless for occasional use.
How do I know if my van is Class 3 or Class 4?
Class is based on height at the front axle and weight. Class 2 is under 1.3m and under 3.5t. Class 3 covers vehicles between 1.3m and 1.9m, including a car towing a trailer. Class 4 covers HGVs and coaches over 3.5t. Sprinter and Crafter panel vans are usually Class 3 if under 3.5t MAM. Always check your V5C if unsure.
When do prices change?
MEL reviews tariffs roughly every quarter. The next change is already announced: from 7 July 2026 the full-route car rate rises from £11.60 to £12.00 contactless (£9.80 to £10.20 on Breeze). The full July 2026 tables are published on this page. Increases over the past two decades have outpaced inflation, with the car rate rising from £2 in 2003 to £11.60 today.
Are prices the same in both directions?
Yes. The same zone pricing applies whether you are heading north or south. The toll plazas sit between T3 and T4 (southbound) and between T6 and T7 (northbound).
Is VAT included in the price?
Yes, all prices on this page are VAT inclusive. Business users can request a VAT receipt for tax reclaim. See our commercial guide for details.
