What class is a hire van on the M6 Toll?
Almost all hire vans are Class 3 (£16.50 contactless or £14.10 Breeze for the full route). Class 3 covers vehicles between 1.3m and 1.9m at the front axle, including Transit, Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Master and most Luton box vans. The 3.5-tonne weight ceiling captures the rental fleet at every major hirer (Enterprise, Hertz, U-Haul, Sixt).
Are 7.5-tonne hire vans Class 4?
Yes. If you have hired a 7.5-tonne box truck (typically for big-house moves or commercial deliveries) it sits over the Class 3 / Class 4 boundary. Class 4 is £19.50 contactless full route, or £16.90 on Breeze. ANPR detects the axle config and applies the correct rate.
Who pays the M6 Toll on a hire van, me or the hire company?
You. Hire companies do not include toll costs in the rental. Pay contactless at the barrier, or set up a Lite account (free ANPR billing) before pickup. The Breeze discount account is overkill for a one-off hire but useful if you do regular hire-van runs.
Will the hire company charge me admin fees if I do not pay?
Yes. If you trigger a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) by failing to pay within the grace window, MEL sends the PCN to the registered keeper, which is the hire company. They will then forward the PCN to you and typically add an admin fee of £15 to £40 on top. Pay at the barrier or via the M6toll.co.uk pay-online portal to avoid this.
Can I claim the M6 Toll on business expenses?
Yes. The M6 Toll is a deductible business expense for hire vans used for work. The receipt or Breeze account statement is sufficient documentation. The toll is VAT inclusive at 20%, recoverable on a VAT return for VAT-registered businesses.
