How to cancel your Breeze account
Online or by phone. Balance refunded to your original card. No exit fee, no cooling-off period, can reopen later if needed. Downgrading to Lite is often a better answer than full closure.
The cancellation flow
- Log in to your account at m6toll.co.uk (or via the M6toll app).
- Open Account Settings from the main menu.
- Choose Close Account. The system shows your current balance and any in-flight unbilled trips.
- Confirm. MEL pays any outstanding tolls from the balance, then refunds the remainder to the original card.
- Wait 5 to 10 working days for the refund to land on your statement.
If anything goes wrong (card expired, account locked) call MEL customer services. Number listed on the contact page at m6toll.co.uk.
Consider downgrading first
If you are cancelling because you no longer do enough trips for the discount to pay back, downgrading to Lite is usually better than closing. Lite keeps the ANPR convenience (no stopping at the barrier, no PCN risk if you forget to tap contactless) for free, at the standard contactless rate.
- Keep Lite if: you cross 1 to 7 times a year and want the no-stop experience.
- Cancel fully if: you sold the vehicle, moved away, or genuinely will not use the toll again.
Cancel Breeze FAQ
How do I cancel my Breeze account?
Through the M6toll.co.uk online account portal: log in, go to Account Settings, click Close Account. You can also call MEL customer services (number on the M6toll.co.uk contact page) and request closure over the phone. Both routes require the account holder's identity confirmation.
Do I get a refund of my remaining balance?
Yes. Any positive balance is refunded to the original payment method (the card you used to top up). Refunds typically clear within 5 to 10 working days. If the original card has expired, MEL will arrange a replacement payment route via customer services.
Can I downgrade to a Lite account instead of cancelling?
Yes. If you want to keep ANPR convenience but stop paying the £20 minimum balance, downgrade from Breeze to Lite in the account portal. Your registration stays linked, and you pay the standard contactless rate (no discount) on future trips with card auto-debit.
What happens to outstanding trips when I cancel?
Cancelling does not erase trip history or unpaid trips. Any tolls that have not yet been billed are settled from your remaining balance before closure. If your balance does not cover them, the registered card is charged. You cannot escape unpaid tolls by closing the account.
Can I reopen my account later?
Yes. There is no cooling-off period or reopening fee. You can open a fresh Breeze or Lite account with the same registration whenever you next need it, with a new £20 top-up if Breeze.
Why might I want to cancel?
Three common reasons. (1) You sold the registered vehicle. (2) You moved away from the Birmingham / Midlands area and no longer use the M6 Toll. (3) Your usage has dropped below the break-even point (around 5 trips per year for full-route, fewer for 1-zone) so the £20 balance is no longer earning its discount. In cases 1 and 2, cancel and refund. In case 3, consider downgrading to Lite instead.
