M6 Toll to Alton Towers
Alton Towers is around 35 miles north of the M6 Toll, so the toll never gets you to the door. What it does is skip Birmingham. From the south you ride the full route for £12.00 contactless (£10.20 on Breeze) for a car, exit at T8 onto the free M6, and continue north to J15 and the A50 towards Uttoxeter.
Why the full route, not a partial one
The M6 Toll runs from T1 (Coleshill, near the NEC and M42 J9) to T8 (M6 J11a, north of Birmingham). Alton Towers is well beyond the northern end, so a partial toll journey saves you nothing: you need the whole road to bypass the M6 through the city, then the free M6 does the rest. That makes this a full-route, 3-zone trip for pricing purposes.
| Origin | Route on the toll | Car toll | After the toll |
|---|---|---|---|
| London / M40 / M42 | M42 J9 to T1, then full route to T8 | £12.00 | M6 north to J15, A50, ~35 miles |
| NEC / Birmingham Airport | T1 (Coleshill) to T8 (M6 J11a) | £12.00 | M6 north to J15, A50, ~35 miles |
| Sutton Coldfield | T2 (Bassetts Pole) to T8 | £9.50 (2 zones) | M6 north to J15, A50 |
| M6 north of Birmingham | Toll not needed, stay on the M6 | £0.00 | Straight to J15 and the A50 |
Sat nav postcode is ST10 4DB, but the park advises following the brown tourist signs for the final couple of miles rather than the satnav, which can route you down a narrow farm lane.
The peak-Saturday case for the toll
On a summer Saturday in school holidays, the free M6 northbound through Spaghetti Junction routinely stacks up for 60 to 90 minutes. The M6 Toll covers the same span in around 22 minutes. For a family driving up from the south to make park opening, that is the whole trip:
- Toll cost: £12.00 for the full-route car crossing.
- Time saved versus the free M6 at peak: 60 to 90 minutes.
- Effective cost per hour saved: often under £10, less than a fast-track ride pass.
- The payoff: arriving for the 10:00 opening instead of joining the 11:30 queues.
Off-peak or midweek, when the M6 itself is flowing, the saving drops to 10 to 15 minutes and the toll becomes a convenience rather than a necessity. See our best-time guide for the hour-by-hour picture.
Alton Towers vs Drayton Manor by the numbers
Both are Midlands theme parks reached off the M6 Toll, but the cost and drive are very different. Drayton Manor sits right by the toll; Alton Towers is a longer haul north.
| Park | Closest toll junction | Car toll from the south | Miles beyond the toll |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drayton Manor | T3 (Lichfield south) | £9.50 (2 zones) | around 6 miles |
| Alton Towers | T8, then M6 J15 | £12.00 (full route) | around 35 miles |
Round-trip toll for an Alton Towers car from the south: £24.00 contactless, or £20.40 on Breeze. See the full Drayton Manor route guide if that park suits your day better.
